Change we can believe in!

Obama has finally codified Bush/Cheney policies in regards to detention and treatment of Gitmo detainees. Here is more info on the new policy:

Followed by a very good article by ProPublica:

This just continues a long tradition of the Obama administration not only endorsing Bush’s policies, but also extending those privileges and authority. Here are just a few examples from his Presidency so far:

Authorizing the extra judicial killings of American citizens.

Re-authorizing the most controversial aspects of the Patriot act, which include the FBI being able to request any document they wish without a court order or any judicial oversight. The Obama admin actually fought for a longer extension of these provisions then even House Republicans were willing to sign up for.

How about an internet kill switch, much like what happened in Egypt? Yeah he likes that one too.

Or how about allowing the tortuous treatment of Bradley Manning, a United State citizen to continue?

There are plenty more examples, but anyone trying to defend him as a constitutional scholar or a civil libertarian is just making excuses at this point. It has become abundantly clear that the Obama administration wishes not only to solidify former Bush policies as normal operating procedure, but they also wish to expand that authority so the executive can do almost anything it wants without oversight.

Change we can believe in!

Win the future!

State of the Union

I think Matt Taibbi summed it up best,

“Usually I find the State of the Union address boring. President (of either party) unveils laboratory-crafted, poll-tested speech, full of promises that over the next year will systematically be broken: opposing party reflexively blasts same speech as lie-filled horseshit, counters with bevy of wildly optimistic, totally insincere policy proposals that they know have no chance of being implemented. It’s pretty much the same situation every year. The twist this year is that both parties seemed genuinely humbled a little by the Giffords incident and toning down the rancor just enough to leave the door open for a little genuine bipartisan cooperation – which I suspect really will occur when it comes time to enact those corporate tax cuts. “

It’s just a ride…

Obama officials caught deceiving about WikiLeaks

I think it was pretty clear from the beginning that the administration would pretty much do anything to discredit Wikileaks. When you have the Joe Biden calling Julian Assange a terrorist on national TV you very quickly realize the rhetoric does not match the reality. Political theatre with a purpose, but remember, it’s just a ride…
